What we learned from the 2009-10 campaign:1) Of all things, Teamgeist (team spirit) is the most powerful, perhaps most beautiful, factor in football. We saw it in Bayern Munich’s improbable march to the Champions League final, and as a rather ordinary Schalke side flirted with their first title in 52 years. But most of all, we saw it in Hannover.
Mirko Slomka’s injury-ravaged side managed to place ninth over the first 12 games of the season, but after Enke’s tragic death, spiraled into rapid decline. After losing nine consecutive matches, Slomka’s side were headed directly for the 2. Bundesliga, possibly with a record even worse than that of Hertha Berin.
Yet, the Lower Saxons rose from the depths of 17th place with five wins in their last ten games—including a 4-2 triumph over Schalke—finishing two points clear of safety.
Results both domestic and abroad proved that although money can bring good players, only teamgeist can win trophies.
