At the night of today, the 10th of November the keeper of Hannover 96 and the German National team, Robert Enke, appearantly threw himself in front of a train. I am shocked.

The final curtain dropped, reality seemed to be too hard in the end. We face a tragedy, so many questions left. One single moment changed everything – like an earthquake with endless aftershocks. We are left behind with confused minds, in awkwardness, complete mental vacuity, just in sorrow. We all had no idea what you might have had to sustain. We are all can just say “sorry” for all that. It's a terrible sadness we apparently couldn't help you getting out this doom loop.

Hopefully you found a better place now and heaven accepts you. We all would gladly have gone a longer way with you while celebrating, cheering and encouraging. Standing together in good and bad times, always united as one team for our club, for our colors.

We'll keep your name in honor, keeping you in our hearts as what you've always been and forever will be – a brother, a buddy, a mate and a marvelous person!

May you've reached your final destination, finding peace and rest.

Good bye, fellow!

RIP number 1.

Enke was my idol when he represented Sport Lisboa e Benfica. A great keeper and great person Im very sad about his death. We Benfica fans understand your tragic lost because we have been in the same situation when Miki Feher died.

Benfica will pay due homage to Robert Enke in the next game against Guimarães.

Indeed.

Additionally, he had the strong wish to return to Benfica at the end of his career (no matter which other club would have been interested in signing him).

Teresa Enke says "Thank You"

The following is a letter written by Teresa Enke for officials, employees, supporters and friends of Hannover 96.

Dear "96ers",

Dear officials, employees, supporters and friends of Hannover 96.

When I think of the incredible amount of condolences I received following my husband’s death, I still can't find the words to describe my gratitude. It was very comforting to see the amount of affection, adulation and respect for Robert as we said our goodbyes. Over the last few days, I've often wished he had realised how much people cared about him. Maybe knowing this would have helped him to check himself into a clinic and reveal the truth to the public. I want to thank Robert’s supporters and friends for grieving with us.

Also, I am very thankful to Hannover 96 and the touching memorial service that was organised in such a short space of time. Moreover, I want to say “thank you” to everyone who has contributed to the organisation of the last few days. The city administration of Hanover, the Hannover 96 employees, the police officers in the arena and on the roads leading to it, the stewards at Hannover 96, the volunteer fire brigade and all the other friends and helpers can be sure of my appreciation.

The decision to have a public memorial service followed by a private funeral service with only close friends and family enabled us to say goodbye to Robert in a more personal way, which was particularly important to me and Robert’s family.

I want to thank all of you from the very bottom of my heart for your help, your condolences, your kind words and the numerous gestures, as well as your respect.

Finally, I wish to emphasise my hope that the togetherness of the city and the club remains strong and forever-lasting. That is what Robert would have wanted.

I have truly been touched by your warmth and kindness.

Yours,

Teresa Enke
