So I guess it makes sense to talk about all things Clint in this thread, whereas Steve gets his own thread here: http://www.hannover96.de/MODULES/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=4152882#4152882

I think Clint is one of the best players, we got (get?) in the last two years. He can pass, he can score, and his facial hair styles, are nice :P

He´s better then Jan Simak or Jiri Stajner (our last Midfielder on Clints position)

I hope he make 7-10 goals this season.

Have a nice day...

No way! As good as Clint is, Simak is much more gifted as a player. Too bad he's a headcase. Figuring in work ethic and all those so-called "soft skills", Clint is more valuable to the team, however.

well, Simak may play better soccer, but Mathis seems to be much more of a professional besides the soccer ground. Given that he hopefully will be at least as important as Simak was for us...

Like I said, taking everything into consideration, he is probably more valuable for the team.

BTW, "Kicker", the most important German football magazine, has given Mathis a "3" for his performance against Rostock last Saturday. They assign these grades on the basis of the German school systems, which grades from 1 to 6, 1 being the best.

"Kicker" is extremely critical and hardly ever passes out a "1". You have to be pretty good to even get a "2" so this is actually a good grade. He was the only player on our team to be graded that well. His average from 4 games is now also a "3", having previously been graded "2" twice and "5" once in his second match.

...better as Jan Simak  :D .....

I´m not sure, but anyway.... my first impression of Clint is good ! Yes, good !
From my point of view you can´t compare JS with Clint.

But one thing i do not "understand", why tried he TWO times to get a job in England ? Doesn´t matter in which league.... Hmmm... Maybe he can understand Englisch better than German  ....

However, i am looking forward to hear, respectively read  more information about Clint from the USA.... 8)

Bundesliga website has no english translation. German clubs should look at clubs like Ajax. http://english.ajax.nl/.

There are only few clubs like Bayern München (Munich) or Bayer Leverkusen, which offer services like that. In their own opinion global players (which Munich could be considered as - Leverkusen...well... ) with big aims.

Maybe Hannover can´t compete against this grade of professionalism, but give us a chance to compansate it with helpful users who answer all your questions and really like good diskussions in foreign languages. :D

Back to topic:

Clint really is a gift to Hannover - 3 goals in 4 games don´t need further to be waged. After his signing at 96 my first thought was:"He will never be able to compete in German Bundesliga for 90 Minutes!". The American Soccer League still has a reputation as "Old people´s Home" for former world class payers from all over the world...Carlos Valderama...Lothar Matthäus...who could no longer keep up with the speed in Europe. Not only the goals but the whole kind of playing made me change my opinion

Bedtime for me now (11:50 p.m.), maybe more tomorrow.

Well... I knew that Clint was said to be a little... funny, but... I found some comments and possibly interesting information on him and his career I didn't want to keep for myself...

That's why he is able to shoot with both feet
Zitat:
Clint Mathis' first soccer coaches were his older brothers. Andrew and Phil are eight and 10 years older than Clint. "When he was little [his brothers] wouldn't let him play unless he just used his left foot," says their mother, Pat Mathis. "They said if he used his right foot, he had to go in the house."

Something... different...
Zitat:
He sometimes barbecues wearing no more than an apron [ ]. He keeps a keg of beer tapped at his townhouse outside New York.

He wears goofy hats, is nicknamed "Cleetus" for his barber shop drawl and his coach keeps dressing him down for dubious fitness. He's Southern-boy polite when out of uniform but can enrage opponents and opposing crowds with schoolboy hijinks.

By the way: http://www.sams-army.com/index.php?Mlist=player&Pid=164

And: http://mlsnet.com/content/02/multimedia/1022mathis1.rm
<- I know why I like him. It's a Real-Player file and I like the way he talks about some things. ("That's not what a team does, dash each other. We pick each other up off the ground. That's what we need to do. If we know we have problems we need to work it out.")

Dear friendms,
thank you for the nice offer and the exciting greeting. I will probably not be back online with an own account too soon. In the summer I will be back for a few weeks, anyway.

Actually I think we have to talk about Clint at least a little, otherwise the Moderatoren may get mad us.

However, I deeply hope he'll score on Sunday and get at us the win!

OK. Mathis did not make the game day roster. It one thing not to start but to not make the final 18 is nasty. The report on yesterdays game says that Mathis was already traveling to be with he US mens national team. Is that just a cover? Did Mathis find out he was not starting and ask to be let go? How bad is his relationship with Lienen? Will he have a place in the game day squad when he returns?

Well, Mathis had a great start over here. He was playing well and scoring important goals. Then he kinda fell into a slump and never quite recovered.

Once the new season started, he got his chances but blew them. Then he was substituted into the game against Schalke and scored the winning goal. How did he celebrate? By pointing to his crotch and then his watch, all while running towards the coach. Still, the coach accepted Mathis' anger and let him start in the next game. But again Mathis failed to make an impression. So now he's out. Coach Lienen said that for somebody who's that vocal in his demands, Mathis is offering way too little on the field.

So my guess is Mathis will not be in the starting lineup or even on the bench anytime soon. But Lienen has shown several times that he will reward good performances during training sessions. Several players who were thought to be out for good have returned due to this policy. So if Mathis is going to be positive about this and works hard, he will get his chances. But then he will have to capitalize on them, too.

We all know that he has not been scoring. Has he been in a position too? I read that he has been playing on the wing some and that is not a good place for mathis.

The game that Mathis started recently, you say Mathis failed to make an impression. Did he play badly? Has his overall play been that bad?

Is Mathis just a player that does not fit in Lienen's system?

Well, it's one thing to not quite fit a system, but it starts to feel more like a lack of effort on his part. Like they say, a good player can adapt to any system.

In the game against Bielefeld, many players were showing that they wanted to get the win. I did not see that from Mathis. I expected to see him on fire, motivated and wanting to impress. But his play felt lackluster and lifeless. At the very least, one can expect that he gives his all, regardless of his position.

But all is not lost, like I said, if he works hard, he will get his chances.

EDIT: as far as his position goes, he had to play offensive (no pun intended ) midfield mainly.

I was really happy for him when he scored the other week since he was one of our favourite players last season. I guess he was one of those guys who didn't exactly benefit from the fact that Ralf Rangnick had to leave. But unlike some other players he did get a couple of chances to fight his way back into the first team. But it didn't really work out, I am afraid. But I agree with der rote. If he tries hard enough he will most definately get another chance. It looks like they might be changing the system, anyway, since we actually saw an exciting game for a change last Saturday...

One more thing: I guess Ewald Lienen hasn't been treating some of the players right. A few other guys - e.g. TC, Krupi and Vinicius - went out there and kicked ass when they finally got their chance. And they proved Ewald Lienen wrong. That was the kind of attitude I really liked... I guess we've all had to work with people we didn't get on with at least once in our lives. But it all depends on what you make off it.

Propably Lienen won't let him play again, but at the other hand Sousa and Christiansen also had problems with our coach so maybe he will get a chance at some point of time... he'll need to work hard for that in practice though...
