Can anyone tell me when, and why, Hannover 96 changed their team colours to red?

I remember the 60s when they played in green shirts, black shorts and white socks. It looked immaculate then - and now!

Any information appreciated. :D

I based my own Sunday team on their old colours here in UK Rotherham district.
The club was founded on April 12, 1896 as Hannoverscher FC 1896. Their initial enthusiasm was for athletics and rugby: football did not become their primary interest until 1899. In 1913, they merged with Ballverein Hannovera von 1898 to become Hannoverscher Sportverein (HSV) von 1896.
Hannoverscher FC's colours were black-white green, but they played in blue, while the Ballverein played in red. The new formed team chose to take red as the primary shirt colour, but the club's official colours are still black-white-green, as you can see in the badge. The 3rd set of shirts is also in that colour combination nowadays. The club's nickname (Die Roten) means the reds in English.
The team colours were asigned to the Hanoverian teams in the early 20th century. 96's long time rival, Arminia Hannover, got a grey shirt-colour assigned.

That combination of colours makes the Hanover fans unique... they usually have red shirts (even though the ultras often were black) with green scarfs and green flags.

The shop on www.96soccer.de , which ships worldwide, will sell the shirts in the 2nd week of october (according to the website).
This are this season's 3rd shirts:

This is last season's (looking much better imho)

Maybe you could get those at the normal webshop: mail to mailto:contact@96soccer.de or mailto:shop@hannover96.de
possible that you won't get a response from the 1st adress... :-/

wrong squig, back in 1900 96 picked "clartet", eintracht played in red/white stripes. ballverein hannovera played in blue.

the first "red" jersey for a hannover 96 team is from 1964. it's claret not red. bummer.

Soulmanash, I will be going to Hannover for the cup game just before Christmas so if you want one of the green away shirts I can bring one back for you. You can try ordering one from the club shop but the postage would probably be more than the price of the shirt. I kid you not!

Thanx for the offer m8.

Its the previous year I'm after though NOT this seasons.

If you can get a 40" half green/half white from 2005 would be lovely.

No problem with payment just let me know and thanx again.

See my Wednesday team leaping up the table? Same as H96 at last

You could also take a look on www.ebay.de , maybe you are lucky there on finding an old shirt.

I'm not sure the club shop will still have last year's kit, but it's worth a try. I need to go in the shop anyway to get a new woolly hat. I left my old one on the train on the way home from the Palace v QPR game.

Squig has a good point. I got mine from ebay!

cheers

@ Londoner: The shop moved to the AWD Arena, I hope you are aware of that ;-)
The old shop at Clausewitzstraße is now as far as I know taken over by die Rote Kurve.
How is your German coming, by the way?

I'm taking a year out from my studies. I passed the GCSE exam (auf Deutsch, mittlere Reife) and my German is good enough to understand what you are saying at the bottom of your messages. Why shouldn't you pay your university fees, eh!

Fully support you on the racism issue.

Prost!

Good to know and congratulations for the exam.
I am actually paying studiing fee, but I wouldn't do that if I would be in Germany, because the universities are worse, they want more money and don't offer any good study grants or scholarships

Ok, back on topic: How do we get such a shirt? ;-)

TUI, Hanover 96's main sponsor, is cutting back on sportsponsoring due to financial problems.
Now TUI made a proposal for 96 to change their shirt colour... from red to yellow. The fans are outraged of course.
I personally think that this is just a way from TUI trying to quit as sponsors.

I think you are absolutely correct Squig. I have never heard of a club sponsor suggesting a club should change their colours, particularly when that club has been wearing the same colours since......well, 1896ish possibly?

Whatever next? Will the beer sellers suggest they should provide weaker beer as they need to sell more?

Sorry, but no luck with last year's away shirt in the club shop. Everything from baby's feeding bottles to swimming trunks, but no out of date shirts.
